Well, Happy New Year to you too JMF!
I can't imagine how you came to be pushing a massive counterweight on a pulley!!
Explain please?

Eh bien, bonne année à vous aussi JMF!
Je ne peux pas imaginer comment vous en êtes venu à pousser un contrepoids massif sur une poulie !!
Expliquez-moi, s’il vous plaît?

Looks like you've set yourself a Sisyphean goal for 2023!

Sisyphean! Yea, I've looked at this photo several times wrapping my head around it several ways. It just isn't a "relax and float down stream" kinda image.

I've got some goals for the year, but they're mostly finish up what I've been doing, better habits. You know, the adjustments that can be done one day at a time, if one just gets at them. The plates pretty darn full and less stress is a goal.

You didn't get a job manually operating a ski lift, did you? Good exercise, if it don't kill you, I suppose. ;)

By the way, it looks like that chunk a concrete just hangs on those pulley cables. Did that block actually move/swing for you?
Ce bloc de béton a-t-il réellement oscillé/bougé pour vous ?

Well, guys,
New year resolutions?
I don't normally do those - too easy to be over ambitious and guarantee failure and disappointment.

But I have embarked on one plan - that is to lose weight, which I started in October at 191 lb and aim to get to 161 lb (30lb) and then continue and try to get to 154 lb  - by the way, these odd weights are British stones and pounds translated to lb for you US residents, so 13 stone 9lb to 11 stone 7 lb (11½ stone) and then 11 stone.  I haven't been 11 stone since my teens and I may look a bit gaunt at this weight but it gives me some headroom to relax the diet a bit and enjoy some cake and a restaurant meal every now and again.  Lat time I lost weight I was very comfortable at 11½ stone.  I lost 17 lb up to Xmas but put on 3 and am now about 14lb (1 stone) lighter than at start.  I aim to lose about 1-1½ lb per week so I reckon it will take me till about the end of May to reach the first target and another 10-12 weeks ( mid August) to reach the second target.  I am using a UK based system (Slimming World) which seems to be working very well.  We'll see what happens later on as the rate of loss of weight inevitably slows as you get lighter.
Second aim is a new year resolution in the normally accepted sense.  I want to do some wild swimming (I have told you about this before but I haven't done anything about it!) before I get too old (I turned 70 just after Christmas).  Coincidentally, at the weekend, I met and spoke to a lady who is a wild swimmer and to be honest she put me off it a bit talking about the hypothermia problems, cardiac effects etc. and she was just in her 30's! So, it looks as if I need to join a group initially.  However, I want to do wild swimming not swimming wrapped up in a wet suit! We'll see.

DF is somewhat cold sensitive. Very little fat on her, to fend off the cold. When I'm lighter, the cold is less tolerable.

I've been shying away from the cold shower after the hot sauna,as much as i think of the health benefits. I've created a middle point room that gets sun, but I can get a warm stove to heat it up. It has been very pleasant in the morning's sunlight, without the breeze. it mitigates the cold.

I've had an old calendar sitting around and discovered that it coincided with the current calendar. So, the resolution is to mark down the good things that I do for my body's need for exercise. That way I get a better reading and am reminded to get up and keep movin'. Two weeks so far, so good. Eating better since the holiday season has gone. I've got ten pounds to drop off and then good habits to maintain. That should be enough.

It definitely feels better without the extra weight. My feet go hiking further, I don't tire, I feel less sluggish and even clear headed. I feel better about myself and my vanity doesn't bother me with images in photos that are different than my imagination. More energy. Keep it up Nuduke. Oh yea, I feel like I'll last longer in a better quality life, sniffing trees and feeling freer away from the crowds that hinder m naturism.

I suspect that the operation will have me on liquid/roughage diet long enough to get off some extra weight like a fast. I've been putting it off for over three years, now. A couple of my friends didn't feel so good for a while after theirs. I don't know how I'll be, until I get there. Hopefully, my stoic resolve will help the mend no matter how it turns out. Thanks for the well wishes and support.

I don't recall any dietary stipulations when I had my first hernia repair in 2009 - just a couple or more weeks of no driving and no lifting anything heavier than a full kettle of water. Perhaps it's different now, or in the USA, with the more litigious climate?

On weight, I always gain a few pounds in winter and lose them again in summer, but I do have to be self-disciplined with the sweet stuff. Currently 141 pounds, target weight 133. I'm the opposite of the people who claim to be "big-boned"! I have skinny thighs and any extra weight goes round my waist and wobbles.

There is risk and potential for pain, while straining during a bowel movement after tha operation. So, I know what stuffs me up and that smoothies laden with fistfuls of greens keep me regular. No strain. no pain.

Doctor is giving me some non-opiated pain pills. Opiates will clog things up, as well. I expect to be drugged for a few days and then continue to take care. DF will look after me. I'll probably be here regularly while immobile, hopefully with a clear enough head. I'll have some time to catch up with some writing...at least rough drafts, to be proofed later. I've got Netflix and Amazon Prime, for the mindless pastiming and can read forever. I'm looking forward to a week, or so, of sitting and maybe walking moderately. My new porch allows me to sit in the sun most days, no matter what is happening outside.

Whatever you do, Jbee, if you get physiotherapy exercises (and if not, ask for them) strict adherence to physio is one very significant factor that aids both speed and effectiveness of recovery.  So if you get exercises to do - DO THeM! No shirking!  But I guess that's not advice you'll need - I'm sure your resilience and focus will make doing them without need for cajolement!

How interesting! Annual like-for-like comparison!! Which year is it that maps exactly onto this year?
I'm assuming that means the days of the week line up as opposed to just the days ...which line up in every year!! :)

No mention of physiotherapy to me. I'll be sure to ask this week when I give them a call.
