Spontaneous nudity
« on: April 26, 2016, 05:40:19 PM »
Have you ever been somewhere, noticed that you are alone, at least for a minute or two and spontaneously decide to get naked for a few minutes or for a picture?

We just got back from a road trip through Death Valley and points north. We spent 2 nights there and then left on Friday to drive up through Owens Valley in eastern California. We stopped at interesting spots on the way and spent most of our time looking for good places to go camping after the weather warms up. With the total mileage at about 800 I kept finding spots to enhance by going bare. I hesitated at one spot in the mountains above 10,000 in a bristlecone grove. We were in about 12" of snow and the view was spectacular but there were a few people about. I had the opportunity, but looking back, I should have gone for it.

Every year in DVNP there is a spring bloom of desert flowers. If there are above normal spring rains there will be what is referred to as a super bloom. More flowers than normal. A couple of months ago we planned to go to see the bloom for this year and booked a room. Afterward there were a couple of heavy rains in the area and a super bloom was predicted. Well, we missed the biggest part of it by about 2 weeks, but we still got to see the higher desert valleys in colors other than brown and grey. If we stayed above elevations of 4000 ft. we had pretty good luck.

The first three of these were taken just this last week. The next two are from 3 years and 7 years ago respectively on occasions I had the spontaneous bug bite.

#1 Panamint Valley
At the north western end of Death Valley there is an overlook where you can get a broad view of the north end of the Panamint valley. We stayed at a motor hotel there in the Panamint Valley ca. 1937, with no tv, no phones, no cell service. At the overlook you have to walk out about 0.6 mile to a promontory. We were the only two people out there for a while. I thought getting naked high up above the valley and feeling the wind was a good idea. Unfortunately I didn't act on it. The next day on our way out we stopped again and I asked my wife to take these couple photos. A sort of delayed sponteneity. We are about 4200 ft. elev. and about 2200 ft. above the valley floor at this viewpoint.

#2 Sierras View
This one was in the White Mountains at about 9300 ft. looking toward Owens Valley and the eastern Sierras. We were on our way up to a bristlecone pine grove. It was a little windy with the temp at about 47D F, but with no clouds very nice.

#3 Old mill
On the way home after crossing back into Nevada we saw a mill foundation right next to the road. The marker on the site said it was an abandoned silver mine. We guessed this small 2 story building might have held a vault for storage. Very little traffic on the road. The walls blocked anyone driving past from seeing me long enough although I could see the road easily about 100 yds. away.

#4 Long lonesome highway
This picture is from a trip back home from Colorado in 2013. We had taken a trip through central Nevada and stopped at an old mining site. This is on the road to the townsite. A lonely straight road stretching off into the distance demanded a naked walk.

#5 Bristlecones
On a campout for my wife's birthday in 2009 we hiked up to the bristlecones in the Spring Mountains outside of town.  That's a bristlecone behind me. We had just finished a conversation with a couple that had been there when we arrived. I asked my wife to take this picture right after they left. We were at about 9900 ft. elev.

There is something energizing about sponteniety and spontaneous nudity in particular. Maybe it's the fact that you are breaking away from normal behavior and wishing you didn't have to put your clothes back on. As someone that enjoys naked hiking, maybe finding a place where I can divest myself of clothes is always lurking in the back of my mind.

We spontaneously park and photograph. It is fresh and liberating getting out of the cab of the car or SUV. I get that, but we usually don't have any clothes on already.

At a Colorado river bridge, with many tourist, I dropped pants and posed stealth when we found an opportunity.

I notice the crisp clean air in the valley. Tucson used to have that. It gives the world a surreal quality. Today, coincidentally after high winds yesterday, I can hardly see the mountains and appreciate this.

Yup. Done that, possibly more often than is wise.

My favourite occasions being during my visit to the Long Barrow at West Kennett when I took this picture inside the barrow:

There was also an occasion when I found myself alone inside a cave in Malta and could not resist spending a few minutes dressed as the first inhabitants of the cave might have been. No pictures of that as it was just too dark.

Have fun,

Ian.

Hmmm, West Kennet Long Barrow looks like Fred Flintstones place.

The flickr pic link didn't lead to a pic, just a sorry.

Yes, I've done this when circumstances permit, assuming I wasn't naked all along. I'll do it if the weather's tolerable (which might imply not many clothes to remove) and no onlookers in sight. If I'm with my wife she'll take a picture, or if I'm alone I wedge the camera somewhere and use the self-timer.

Spur of the moment, spontaneous and on a whim. Yep, sounds like a plan to me! Over the years my wardrobe has evolved to quick on quick off especially in the summer month. Elastic waist, baggy shorts with a light shirt as it seems that long pants tend to be difficult to get over shoes. I did have a pair of breakaway sweat pants but the snaps wore out. I need to start planning more and at least keep one camera in the car. here at least it seems that kilts are becoming more common, at least I don't get those looks and have met some others clad the same way. Maybe the trend will continue as it is the easiest garment to remove by far!

Post now edited to use my usual embedded image with clickable link to a larger copy. I should have done that yesterday but it is something of a chore when using a tablet and my lazy streak came to the fore...

Have fun,

I've indulged spontaneously a few times at lunch times. If I'm between jobs when it's break time and I'm in the right sort of place (not usual, hence the need for spontaneity) I pull the van over, take my lunch into the trees (we're talking countryside here) and strip down for a pleasant half-hour or so. Unfortunately the combination of an out-of-town customer, a lunch break at the right time, and suitable weather is not too common ...

This trip started as a just a drive to see some of the places I plan to visit soon. Saturdays at the local parks are a challenge and this one would have been quite the quest as almost every mountain biker in the area had to have been there. Not that anything was planned, however I did put the   small waterproof camera in the center console a few days ago for those occasions described here. Not wanting to end the trip yet I decided to visit one of the wildlife areas I had found last year. The spring turkey season lasts until the 14th or so and I figured there would be hunters looking for that trophy bird. Despite the lull in the rain and not being too bad temperature wise I had thought at least a few would be out there but the place was empty of anyone. So I did my little two mile walk just to se what changes had taken place since last fall. The corn fields had been cut down and the open corn husks with bare cobs attested to the fact that animals had eaten all winter. Also the grass had not been cut so it was almost knee high in places. Enjoy the views!

I notice that I am nearly always naked. When I'm not, I'm ready to disrobe and looking for an opportunity. It would be rare that I didn't take an opportunity, unless it was an extreme hassle, or just too, quick to take the trouble, or uncomfortable.

I was at a weekend party/festival at a friends place. It is a place where we are generally nude and accepted. The circumstance didn't make naked appropriate, so I was dressed most of the weekend, except a solo stroll out in the desert in the morning, where I had parked to sleep out rather than drive two hours home. DF was occupied elsewhere in the state.

On Sunday, we played a small concert in the acoustic sweatlodge. It was packed and getting hot, even though the place wasn't then heated, just a venue with fun acoustics. There were a few comments like "Why do we have clothes on?" After the show, it was okayed by the owner to turn on the heater. A few of us got naked and had an extra concert, this time without instruments that couldn't take the heat.  We played didgeridoo and big water bottles for drums. Didn't have to tell me twice, but most of us stayed outside and dressed. There were strangers and I suppose that those staying clothed didn't feel the usual comfort zone. Others were expected, etc. Not deterred, we in minority stuck with our program on a beautiful day.

After the sweat/sauna, I sat at a long full table dinning. There was one nude female friend next to me. A guy took over that was having trouble with his drinking and had decided to confess to us all. He went on with a tale of whaoh. After a time, he told how he liked being there, as he felt so accepted and appreciated it. He pointed out, "Talk about acceptance. Look there are two naked people sitting here across from me." I looked in the wrong direction, away from my nude cohort, as everyone else looked at us. I mimed like, "Where?" Then I looked at the woman next to me and said, "Well, there's 'one' here." like I didn't realize that I was barefoot all over. She did the same, as if she didn't know that she wasn't clothed. Then, we pointed as if we had just realized that we were comfortable enough to not be aware of our natural state. Ya know, it didn't matter that we were dressed, or not, socially, except to our bodily senses.

Well, sun going down, air cooling, electric music beginning on the stage and more people arriving for that, I put clothing back on. After a bit, I drove back to town to see DF, but I got undressed before I left. After a couple of hours accepted without, it just seemed right to be that way...and wrong to stay covered.

I think one of the earliest occasions I had a spontaneous naked experience was in Italy. My wife and I were spending a holiday with a German couple. During the holiday we decided to walk along a delightful alpine meadow. We stopped at a small hut where we bought some refreshments and then carried on a little longer. My German friend, who was and still is quite a mountaineer told me there was a lovely view from a lake higher up the mountain.  We left our wives behind and went up a few hundred metres to find the lake.

Once there we were of course quite hot. (me more than him!) A swim seemed the most natural thing in the world so we both stripped off and had a dip. I wondered if Mrs D would believe we'd had a swim so I asked him to take a photo of me with my camera, which he did. The image is taken fro  a 35 mm slide. A year later saw us in France and I remember sunbathing naked on a riverside and for the first time walking about and being completely relaxed with nudity with other people about. Again another picture from a 35 mm slide

Oh dear, I had just composed most of a post with pics and text and somehow it went west.
Not going to repeat the composing as it was another description of a failed recce last weekend to a local (20' drive) to a disused canal area that turned out not to be rather deserted as a friend that walks there had said but a recreational superhighway for ramblers, dogs, kids and inappropriately clad totty from the nearby town about 5 miles away and in sight of a huge pub which, recently refurbished and extended with huge nearly full car park, looked nothing like the dilapidated old pile that is on Google maps.

I will post one photo though which illustrates that in Lincolnshire it's often very difficult to get away from the sight of people.  From the canal towpath you could see over fields for miles of flat terrain.  A nude man could be clearly picked out as far as the eye can see!  There is a road right at the back of this picture upon which I could see figures walking and roughly what they were wearing!  The foreground is the canalside hedge.

So when I complain about the lack of woodland and cover of land undulations in the countryside around me, you will have some idea what I mean.

So no spontaneous nudity for me that day even though I kitted myself out to take advantage of any opportunities that arose.

Any place to just head out to and then lie down/sit and sun, maybe read at? A bed of tall grass, a meadow, something calm and quiet. A corner or a woods, next to a field. There appears to be less in the way of trees and brush than my desert! It looks more barren and flat than the Great Plains.

If this is what you are finding in a 20 mile radius, perhaps you could take up backpacking, or camping and do overnights. Any kayak appropriate lakes with distant shores lined with trees?

Will the fields grow up and the hedge rows next to them, give any respite, as summer comes?

You seem to be looking for water routes. People typically and historically follow and congregate along water. How about the high road? Are there no gullies, un-farmable and with thicker vegetation?

I looked at google maps satellite images when you first told us about the new abode. There were several dark green canopied wooded areas. What's up with those?

If I have a story, or a post gets me on a roll, I cut and paste to a word document and have a backup, cause I hate when that happens.

By the end of our visit to Dewey last year, I was feeling this way also. As you pointed out in your post, 'Free Range Without a Net', this comfort and ease around others when you are naked has an element of trust in it.
