I was having much more fun than pay. It was lots of fun, but nothing impressive. I'm exploring options for the next 10 to 30 years, getting feet wet, exploring some things completely new. I intend to explore some various things to do two or three days a week in the future, none of which with the intent to significant financial return...unless it is fun and doesn't keep me from the true wealth that I already have an abundance of.

How enigmatically vague, Jbee!  Hope the quest goes well.

Makes me think though.  I've been retired now for about 3 years and whilst I do lots of work for people voluntarily on committees and soforth, I wonder whether anyone would employ me.  Mind you, I don't have a lot of desire to be employed - most of the things I want to do don't really include working!  Whilst Mr Micawber was a character diametrically opposed to mine and one who hitherto only exacts mild contempt, I can't help sitting back and thinking that 'something might turn up'!

Ah nuduke, much the same as I am nearing my fourth anniversary of retirement I have had the opposite problem as employment offers come in quite often. Most ties to various organizations have been cut as we enjoy the freedom to pick up and go at a moments notice. Our commitments are mostly to family and church with some occasional volunteer work. My previous employment had me at a jack of all trades master of none status so there are always those who say, "If you need a little extra sometime give me a call" or " I could sure use someone with your experience".  I'd think a job that would include free range opportunity could be my only consideration at this time.

Nuduke, you can try aarp.org/parttimeworkfair. They have some freelancing tips, etc. 75% of their survey had the intention to continue working during retirement. It is on there although the virtual fair is over for now. Some good ideas and information.

Now, back on topic. Here's a good day:

The good weather is back. At noon, I decide to take advantage. I step out onto the granite slab to see how it feels. It is wonderful. It compels me to go further, but I need to protect my bare feet.

Five-toes on, I walk out to the sweat and grab a broom. The stealth trail to Havarock has needed a sweep off of prickery cholla buds and other landmine debris.

I sweep my way along the trail. There are many hoof prints, large and small. The ground is dug up here and there. I hear an animal in the bushes a few feet away, but find it to be an uncharacteristic cottontail bunny.

I smell an animal as I approach the ridge near Havarock. Someone is home. I’m surprised by a large sound today. Two mule deer burst to the north, another to the east. I try the deeksha energy, but this time, it doesn’t seem to show noticeable calm in the deer. They do however, stop and just stare at the strange naked intruder with his hands in the air.

I just stand still and observe for a while, as they observe back. After a while I decide that I don’t want to disturb them in this sheltering retreat. I want them to come back and enjoy this place, as I know is their tradition. I pick up my broom and turn, walking away.

A few steps and I hear the loudness of more deer bounding away, which had been in cautious hiding just 30 feet or so, behind rocks. Three more, I count. Two do that springing jump tha they do from a standing position. First one an dthen the next, lie a déjà vu. These two have so few individual characteristics, like twins. A little more observation and I am on my way. What a gift it is to live here.

Thanks for the link, JBee.
I think the commuting would be tricky for anything AARP could offer!
Actually that led me to google around for UK based similar organisations.  The Association of Retired and Persons Over 50 comes up but all the links to it I could find were duds, the Association of Retired and Persons.co.uk is up for sale  and just their skiing club remains it would seem.  Wandering into the thicket of links there are tons of over 60 organisations and such but nothing I can find in the UK similar.  However in US the business of online fellowship for seniors seems much more well developed.  (bigger audience/market, I suspect).
Of those sites I found that dealt with matters over 50 I was entirely uplifted!  I am 64 and I am just not that old!  I don't need a big button mobile, or a funeral insurance plan, or, as yet, any discreet incontinence aids*, neither am I confused or bewildered by computers or the internet and I do not have 'general' interests like food or gardening (although I have to eat, and also angrily and reluctantly to slash away at the ever burgeoning but unnecessary fecundity of my shrubs and grass) nor do I wish to engage in forum discussions about which is the right way to dispense toilet roll - over or under the roll!  (Mind you, I wouldn't turn a hair if that were to turn up in our discussions.  Some years ago I had a work colleague who gave a very funny speech involving classifying people into 2 distinct categories when using toilet paper - folders and scrunchers!)
Anyway, the finding was that I'm not so crumbly and bland apparently as the people portrayed in the ads and on the websites so hurrah for that!  If I'm going to pull in some wages or fees it'll be by networking and native wit not applying for online job ads!
Mind you, google "websites for over 60s" and the sheer number of over 60's dating sites that pop up is gobsmacking.  It would appear nobody over 50 is married any more or are looking for an adulterous relationship with an unrealistically good looking sexagenarian.

So, as yet I'm not in need of retirement aid!  Thank you for that positive trigger, JBee!

Oh Ma Goshen! Dividing TP users into two categories? Would there be a third category possible?

The sit down wipers like it rolled under. The stand up wipers have been known to screw up their backs bending to dig under, so give 'em a break and leave it over, like any first class hotel will...An I know class!

Online corporate job adds are not for my golden years either. There are some good webnar recordings in there, however.
There is no AARP over there!? They do lobbying, and advocate for oldsters. The inform us and keep us as a political unit, when the corporate government tries to raid our accounts and cut our benefits and privatize. It stands in their way. What stands in the way over there?

Incontinence? I knew a naturist in his 80's who wore a black g-string contraption with stuffing...or was he just trying to look like his unit was bigger?...nah, he didn't swim in the contraption. I suppose the beach would be a good place for incontinence. Free hiking, safe. Backyard...definitely sit on a towel. Swimming pools, not so much good....more solitary naturist pursuits would be safer from embarrassment.

Nuduke,
This reminds me of some recent posts we had here about anarchists and whether an anarchist or a contrarian could remain a contrarian if they joined The Contrarian Society:-\

Quote from: Nuduke
The Association of Retired and Persons Over 50 comes up but all the links to it I could find were duds, the Association of Retired and Persons.co.uk is up for sale . . .
A group of retired people manning the substance and upkeep of a website would seem counterintuitive as they are all retired.

Maybe you should knock a little louder! :D

Indeed, the paradoxical contradiction of a society of Contrarians did not escape me!  Similarly it would seem that any committee of Anarchists would be a short lived entity before it was forcibly disbanded. Similarly, or maybe differently, I once was staying in a hotel on a business trip and there was a sign outside advertising a meeting of the Psychic Society in the hotel conference rooms.  Why, I wondered did they need the sign?  Surely members would predict where to go in advance!  Well, I noted the meeting was in full swing as I passed the open door and I sat in my room for hours trying to contact them but to no avail. Genuinely also, when I was at University there was an Apathy Society which seemed to consist only of notices on a particular noticeboard saying things like 'There will be no outing of the Apathy Society this term as no-one has bothered to book a ticket'; 'Apologies there are no minutes of the Apathy Society Meeting as no one could be bothered to take any notes'; 'The Apathy Society AGM last week was not attended by any members' etc.,etc.
Strange world!

John

PS The contrarian link was a dud, Duane but the contrarian society Facebook page had several pages all of which were blank.  How tantalising - is it in fact intentional or just the result of indolence on the part of the page owner?

Went out to Havarock with a different purpose yesterday. It was nippy and rattlers are hibernating, so I went across the ridge without a trail. I wanted to inspect the ten acres north of me, to possibly invest in them. I can see the layout better from up there. First time that I have done this clothed in years.

Curiously, I bumped into another gentleman coming from the other side, the first time in years. He was looking at the lot, which has been for sale for years, as a real-estate investment, too! Maybe I can arrange to buy HAvarock?

Coincidental! Good that I wasn't being my usual naturist at the time.

John, the link wasn't to a contrarian website but to a post here on FRN regarding a topic drift from one of Jbee's posts. Hope this one works. I tested it and it did.

He had reported meeting some folks from, "Camping Bares" who group camp and hike free range in organization. An anarchist Disorganization Dedicated to the Destruction of the Fabric of our Society, according to the business card" and I was musing about an anarchist with a business card, which derailed the conversation even more.

Of course, this brings to mind one of those imponderables you are so fond of John, from George Carlin, which states; "One can never know for sure what a deserted area looks like."

I don't know what Carlin thought of Groucho, but I tend to think of Carlin as the satirical descendant of Groucho. Both of them fired at all the sacred cows, but Carlin was edgier and more in your face.

Jbee, I hope you are able to increase the size of your stomping grounds.
That would be great.

Today, I wandered out toward Havarock, clad only in flip flops. I was fascinated that where my trail goes, the flowers were more in bloom and healthier. I was watching this pattern and going through a rocky area, when I herd a rattle. Huh? Where is it. I moved quickly in the opposite direction away from the noise. I only slowly figured out where it was coming from. I looked back after a safe distance. I had stepped over a young rattler. Fortunately not on it. Without the warning, it might have been different.

I had my spring rush, my lesson. My peace diminished completely. My interest in the pattern of the flowering was nearly gone. I found a way to quickly skirt the critter. I just went home. Dang rattlers, and dang bifocals. Surprises like this take the fun and ease out of the desert. The trail is over grown now. Time for spring trimming.
